Greatness Has a Cost

“… Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.”Matthew 19 16-22 (NIV)

I had made a decision to follow Christ a while back but before I did, there were some bad habits I indulged in that I really enjoyed. I knew that following Christ would mean having to forfeit those habits, so it made me start second-guessing my decision. For months, I struggled with giving up this so called ‘good’ life. After much back and forth with my conscience, I decided to trade all that to follow Christ squarely.

According to the passage, the rich young ruler just couldn’t let go of his earthly wealth even though the eternal wealth was right in front of him. He had attached too much importance to his possessions and didn’t realise that no matter how much he tried to protect it, he would still not go to heaven with any of it. Life is about trade-offs and the rich man wasn’t willing to take that risk. What are you holding on to that is making you reject God’s higher calling to a life of eternal greatness and legacy? It’s not late – align yourself with God’s agenda for your life today!

Have a wonderful day!

Confession: I receive grace to see my relationship with God as a treasure, so I can trade everything else and pursue my treasure to the fullest.
